Dr. Fred on ADDICTION » Common questions
Q. Is it bad if I just use this substance occasionally? Am I at risk for addiction?

A. The answer to this question must be individualized.  Many believe some people can partake in these activities without becoming addicted.

“Addiction” means doing or using something despite ongoing negative consequences.

If there are no or minimal negative consequences to the action, perhaps it is okay for one to use occasionally (i.e. having a drink of alcohol in your home).

However, this answer must be taken on a “case by case” basis given there are many forms and definitions of occasional use/activity.
