There is no way of telling exactly which treatment might suit your own specific needs.  You may find that the 12-step program is most effective, or that a specialized inpatient or residential treatment center does the trick.  Perhaps, the addition of medication or some form of individual therapy based on your addiction will eventually prove to be the most helpful intervention.

However, one thing is clear.

Getting together with other people who share similar interests can be ultimately an extremely effective approach and often can be used as a primary or adjunctive treatment that is unlikely to cause harm.
