A. A 12-step program is based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Over time, this has been applied to many other addictions with effective outcomes available. Forms of 12-step programs include, but are not limited to, those utilized by Overeaters Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, and others.

There are several goals in these programs, but a lifestyle based on respecting these 12 steps is essential to its effectiveness. Other important features include attending meetings, eventually coming to grips with a “higher power,” seeing oneself as “powerless” over one’s addiction, obtaining a sponsor, helping others, and often sharing your own stories and views.

The 12-step programs have surely saved many people’s lives. The Fellowship that is created and maintained allows for unconditional support in the best and worse of times as well as providing a framework for a lifestyle without active addiction.
