An alcoholic (or alcohol addict) is defined as somebody who uses despite awareness of associated negative consequences directly or indirectly related to its use.

There are usually many efforts that the addict has made to control, limit or eliminate alcohol, and these are frequently unsuccessful. The outcomes can be devastating and are often accompanied by varying (and sometimes overwhelming) levels of denial that there is an issue at all.
